The whole of Bilbao sprawls out below you from where we will enjoy the best panorama out over the city and the mountain backdrops. This is the ideal place to learn about the city’s long history before we head down to the Old Town on a funicular opened in 1915 (tickets included).
A walk along the river to the Old Town will take us along the city centre section of the Nervion River, through what was previously the heart of some of Bilbao’s heavy industry, allowing us to get a feel for the incredible reinvention of the city.
Bilbao’s Old Town, with tall, narrow lanes lined with thriving shops and tapas bars is a must. We will visit the most important sights, including the original «Seven Streets» (Zazpi Kaleak) that once made up Bilbao, La Ribera Market, the cathedral of Santiago or Plaza Nueva, where we can have lunch (not included) in one of the many establishments piled high with plates of mouthwatering pintxos.
So much has been written about the unique building that single-handedly put Bilbao on the tourist map. Turned into the symbol of the new Bilbao, Guggenheim Bilbao Museum presents one of the most ambitious cultural projects of the century. Even if you are not turned on by contemporary art, the Guggenheim is a must see experience. Explore the museum by yourself (entrance not included) to enjoy its 20 galleries and to appreciate the museum’s structural design, which is a masteriece in itself.
